What are the requirements to become a Texas notary?

To become a Texas notary public you must be a legal resident of Texas, be at least 18 years of age, and you must not have been be convicted of a felony or a crime that involves moral turpitude that has not been dismissed or discharged by law.

How do I renew my Texas notary commission?

You will need to complete the state required notary application, and purchase the required notary bond and state fees, notary seal and notary record book. The State of Texas does require you to complete the application in full even though you are a renewal. Click 'Renew your Commission' to start your application today.

How long does it take to complete the Texas notary process?

You will receive your new commission and notary products within 7-10 days after we have received your completed notary application and payment, and your application is eligible to go to state.

Can I apply for my Texas notary commission over the phone?

No. You cannot apply to be a Texas notary or renew you Texas notary commission over the phone. You can apply online on our website. Click 'Become a Notary' or 'Renew Commission' to start the online notary process.

Is there required notary training before becoming a Texas notary?

No, there is no required Texas notary training prior to becoming a Texas notary. However, we recommend taking our optional course or purchasing a Texas Notary Handbook to review prior to performing notarizations.

No. Nothing on your Texas notary application paperwork needs to be notarized.

I've submitted my Texas notary application. Am I a Texas notary now?

No. Only the Texas Secretary of State's office can commission you as an official Texas notary. As your notary bonding agency, we handle your Texas notary application and manufacture your notary supplies once you are commissioned by the Texas Secretary of State's office.

How do I find out the status of my Texas notary application?

Once we receive your eligible Texas notary application it will be electronically submitted to the Texas Secretary of State's office. If any information is missing or incorrect, we will contact you to correct the application prior to submission. You will receive your notary commission once the State of Texas has processed the notary application, usually within 7-10 days. How do I change my Texas notary public commission name?

Texas law does not require you to change the name on your Texas notary commission. However, you are able to amend your Texas notary commission if you prefer. Click here for the required paperwork. Please note, once you begin the Texas notary name change process you will be unable to notarize until you receive your new Texas notary commission.

If I move out of state, can I transfer my Texas notary commission?

You cannot transfer your Texas Notary Public commission to another state. Notary commissions are specific to individual states, and notary laws can vary widely between states. If you are moving out of state, you must resign your Texas notary commission and re-apply in your new state.

Do I need to notify you of an address change?

The State of Texas requires that all Texas notary address changes be submitted in writing within 10 days of the address change. If you are bonding through Budget Notary Bonding Agency, complete the Address Change Form and return it to us. I obtained my Texas notary commission through my job, do I need to notify the Texas Secretary of State's Office if I leave my current employer?

Yes, you do. According to Texas law, you have to notify the State of any changes to your business address or business phone number, as well as your home address or home phone within 10 days of the change. I received my Texas notary stamp in the mail today, however there was not a certificate or any other documents with the stamp, am I still able to start notarizing documents now?

Your Texas notary stamp and Texas notary certificate are sent to you separately. Your notary products will come from Budget Notary. Your Oath/Certificate will come from the State of Texas, usually by email. 

Important: You may not perform any notarizations until you have received your Certificate and taken your Oath before another notary public.

The Texas notary commission number I had when I became a Texas notary previously is not the same as the notary commission number I received upon renewing my Texas notary commission. Shouldn't the numbers be the same?

Yes, your commission number as a Texas notary public should not change.  If you receive a new stamp/seal and the number has changed from your previous stamp/seal; please contact our Customer Service department at 866.328.5524 to resolve the problem.
